An Introduction to Suicide Prevention

The presentation will take a look at the growing problem of suicide and discuss why people hesitate to intervene and hesitate to ask for help. Michael Crisanto, community outreach specialist at Advanced Recovery Systems, introduces the basics of QPR (question, persuade, refer) and explains the importance of suicide awareness and how to address the issue with a loved one or friend.

Objectives:

  1. Recognize the impact suicide has on people across America and risk factors
  2. Understand the stigma surrounding suicide and talking about mental health
  3. Know how to recognize warning signs, broach the subject of suicide and get their friend or loved one help

About the Speakers:

Michael Crisanto, M.A., is a Clinical Outreach Specialist at Advanced Recovery Systems (ARS), specializing in helping individuals find substance abuse and mental health treatment. Michael has over 10 years of experience working in behavioral health including roles in suicide prevention, outpatient counseling, forensics, medication assisted treatment (MAT), and case management.

Michael received his Master of Clinical Psychology from the University of Central Florida and received his Bachelor’s of Psychology from the University of Florida. Prior to joining ARS, Michael served as a Suicide Prevention Specialist, partnering with behavioral health organizations, hospital systems, schools, and agencies to implement best-practice guidelines and provide evidence-based trainings in suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention. Michael has also served as a mental health counselor, provided individual and group counseling to adults in an outpatient setting. Michael is bilingual in Spanish and English and is proud to serve the Florida community.
