Providing an alternative to the 12 steps, SMART Recovery focuses more on the principles of self-reliance and self-acceptance. The 12 steps ask members to look to a higher power to remove character defects and battle addiction whereas SMART Recovery asks members to look to themselves to manage their destructive behaviors. It is no secret that a substance use disorder can also affect the friends, family members, co-workers, spouses and loved ones of those who are afflicted with it. Sometimes these loved ones need an open and supportive environment where they can speak honestly about their feelings. Al-Anon and Nar-Anon provide such an environment.
