Alcoholics Anonymous was founded in 1935, and almost 20 years later, there was a noticeable need for a 12-step program that was dedicated to those who were addicted to harder substances. SMART Recovery is a little different in that it offers a 4-point program, it doesn’t do sponsorship, it focuses on self-reliance and the meetings are more of a group conversation as opposed to one person sharing to the whole group.
